Hundreds
of residents celebrated Earth Day on April 21, 2007 by getting
their feet wet literally. For Joseph Seebode's army of Cub and
Boy Scouts it meant the removal of hundreds of pounds of refuse,
debris, floatables and tree snags from the Rahway River in
Winfield Park. For the Hanson Park Conservancy it translated to
the removal of a wide range of man made debris entangled
awkwardly high in trees and
shrubs
at Hanson Park, the vestige of a recent severe flood. For the
Rahway City Environmental Commission, the removal of tires and other household goods from
the banks of the Rahway River in
an industrial area. For untold
hundreds more volunteers throughout the watershed, it was a day
to treat the River with some kindness and nobility. Where the
river runs through the communities, the Rahway River was
recognized a overlooked natural resource that received some much
needed attention.
