Date: 1/26/08 Title: Hanson Park Conservancy/Rahway River Association Sponsors “Exploring Nature’s Wonders at Nomahegan Park” Location: Cranford, NJ. Time: 9:00 – 12:00 pm

Description: Join the guided hike leader Dennis Miranda on a mid-winter hike of Nomahegan Park in search of wintering birds and other wildlife. Dress warmly. Loaner binoculars are available.  To register or for more information, please call Dennis Miranda at 570 228-1404.  

 

Date: 2/23/08 Title: 2ND Annual Winter Bird Count Location: Meet at Springfield Road at Echo Lake Park, Westfield, NJ Time: 8:00 am -1:00 pm

Description: Join leader Dennis Miranda on the second annual mid winter bird count will assess the total number of species found in the Rahway River watershed. Novices and advanced birders welcomed. Date: 3/26/08 Title: The 2nd Annual Owl Prowl and other Night Critters Location: Skeet Shooting Parking Area, Lenape Park, Kenilworth Blvd, Cranford, NJ.  Time: 7:30 - 9:00 pm.

Description: Join Rahway River Association and Hanson Park Conservancy leaders as they lure the nocturnal residents with owl calls and other weird sounds. Bring flashlights and warm clothing. Date: 4/12/08 Title: Hiking the Wilds of the South Mountain Reservation

Location: Trailhead of Locust Section of South Mountain Reservation, Millburn, NJ Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Date: 4/21/08 Title: Hanson Park Conservancy and the Rahway River Association Sponsors: “Native Flowers to Attract Birds and Butterflies”

Location: Cranford Community Center, Walnut Drive, Cranford, NJ

Time: 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Description: Gain insight into what wonderful and beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees can be grown in your backyard and gardens while supporting local birds, butterflies and wildlife. Date: 5/22/08 Title: Hanson Park Conservancy and Rahway River Association Hanson Park Birdwatching 101 Location: Hanson Park, Springfield Ave., Cranford, NJ

Time: 7:00 – 9:00 pm Description: Join veteran birder Dennis Miranda as he guides you on a short walks identifying the sights and sounds of the 70+ species of migrating songbirds that may be found in mid May. Description: Just short distance from downtown Westfield is an idyllic nature preserve with remarkably old trees, wildflowers and birds to be discovered! Join RRA’s Dennis Miranda as he guides you into this natural area to learn what it has to offer. Dress for warm weather; bring insect repellent and your curiosity. Loaner binoculars are available.

Date: 7/23/08 Title: Exploring the Old Growth Woods at Rahway River Greenway Location: Meet at Bloodgood Dam Parking Lot, Winfield Park, and NJ

Time: 9:00 – 11:00 am

Description: Join New Jersey Conservation Foundation’s Director of Biology Dr. Emile DeVito as he guides you to a seldom trammeled section of the Rahway River Greenway amid giant tulip trees and peering Night Herons.  Loaner binoculars are available.

9/13/08 Fall Birdwatching Tour of Joe Medwick Park Location: Carteret, NJ

Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Description: Join Fred Virrazzi of the National Biodiversity Parks as he guides you in search of late fall migrant raptors, waterfowl and other stragglers to this wonderful but seldom visited section of the Rahway River.  Joe Medwick Park is a unit of the Middlesex County Park system. Loaner binoculars are available.

9/21/08 Title: Canoe the Rahway River Location: Cranford Canoe Club at Springfield and Orange Avenues, Cranford, NJ.  Time: 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Description: Herald the first day of autumn with a canoe trip down the Rahway River from the storied Cranford Canoe Club! Join local guides as they describe the natural and cultural resources found along the shores.  Fee required with Canoe Club for rental.

Date: 9/27/08 Title: Ashbrook Swamp Natural History Tour  Location: Ashbrook Swamp Reservation, Union County Vocational Technical School Parking Lot, Martine Ave., Scotch Plains, NJ  Time:  9:00 am -12:00 pm

Description: Join New Jersey Conservation Foundation’s Biologist Dr. Emile DeVito as he guides you into the rarely seen wildlands of the Ashbrook Swamp Reservation. See rare flowers and unusual natural features found there. Loaner binoculars are available.

Date: 10/11/08 Title: “Hanson Park Conservancy/Rahway River Association’s 2nd Annual Hanson Park History Hike”  Location: Hanson Park, Springfield Ave., Cranford, NJ Time:7:00-9:00 pm Description: Go back into time and learn about the history of the “Venice” of the Rahway River, Cranford, New Jersey. Date: 11/8/08 Title:  “Strolling along the Rahway at Bezaga Park”  Location: Union & Allen Street, Rahway, New Jersey

Time: 9:00 – 11:00 am Description: Learn how the City of Rahway removed 11 homes from a flood prone area and restored the wildlife habitat of a riparian corridor.
